Common Diseases in Chilli

 

CMV & ChiVMV (veinal mottle virus)

Symptoms: Mottling, puckering, distortion & yellowing of leaves, Deformed fruits, Stunted plants.

Control measures

Ø  Resistant varieties

Ø  Control weeds

Ø  Remove infected plants

Ø  Control aphids (Dimethoate @ 0.2%)

Ø  Raise seedlings in net

 

Leaf Curl Virus 

Symptoms: Severe stunting of plants, reduced leaf size, curling, crinkling & rosette like.

Control Measures

Ø  Resistant varieties

Ø  Control weeds

Ø  Remove infected plants

Ø  Control whiteflies (Imidachloprid @ 0.05% or Dimethoate @ 0.2%)

Ø  Raise seedlings in net

Ø  Sticky traps (yellow)

Powdery mildew

Symptoms:  Powdery growth on lower side & brown , spots on the upper side of the leaves, severe defoliation

Control Measures

Ø  Resistant varieties

Ø  Foliar application of wettable sulphur (0.3%) or Hexaconazole (0.1%) or Tebuconazole (0.075%)

Phytophthora root rot

Symptoms: Damping off or collapsing of seedlings, collar & root rot, leaf blight & fruit rot, plants wilting in patches.

Control measures

Ø  Resistant varieties

Ø  Raised bed cultivation

Ø  Avoiding water stagnation

Ø  Crop rotation

Ø  Fungicides (metalaxyl and fixed copper)

 

Anthracnose fruit rot

Symptoms:  Water-soaked spots on fruits with concentric rings, become dark and depressed. Seeds are also affected.

Control Measures

Ø  Seed treatment

Ø  Fruits harvest in rain free conditions

Ø  Crop rotation

Ø  Avoiding overhead irrigation

Ø  Fungicides (chlorothalonil or mancozeb)
